WSI board member, Dr. Kari Fasting, has been appointed as an external expert to the International Biathlon Union (IBU) Equality Working Group.
Biathlon is one of the sports with very high standards in some area of Gender Equality. Dr. Fasting says “there are equal quota places for men and women at major events. There are equal amount of medal events for women and men throughout the World Cup and at major events like the World Championships and Olympic games. IBU also pays equal price money to women and men, and Mixed Relays and Single Mixed Relays formats have become a core part of biathlon. But like for many other sports there is a huge lack of female leadership in the National federations and in the coaching staff. The Gender Equality Working group first task is to develop a gender equality policy which among other tasks will focus upon changing this situation.”
